Pezzota Takes out Top Seed Romiglio in Cordoba Open

Argentine qualifier Robertino Pezzota remains on course to lift a third consecutive PSA World Tour title after downing top seed Leandro Romiglio to reach the semi-final of the Tour de las Americas – PSA Cordoba Open, PSA M5 tournament.

Pezzota made a stunning return from a year’s hiatus last week at the Mar del Plata Open – the first stage of the Tour de las Americas – and defeated Romiglio in the final to capture the fifth PSA World Tour title of his career.

Romiglio came into the match looking to avenge his defeat to his compatriot in Mar del Plata and was unlucky not to take a one-game lead after narrowly missing out on the tie-break. From there, Pezzota edged the second before surging to victory in the third for the loss of just three points, extending his lead on the head-to-head record between the pair to 3-1.

Colombia’s Dairo Sandoval will lie in wait for Pezzota in the semi-final after the number eight seed ended the title challenge of wildcard Hernan D’Arcangelo to reach the next stage.

Bryan Cueto, meanwhile, overcame second seed Andres Herrera with a 3-0 victory, and he will take on Edgar Zayas in an all-Mexican semi-final after the sixth seed saw off Brazil’s Diego Gobbi.
