Valenzuela Stuns Pezzota in Mar Del Plata Open

The final qualifying round of the Decker Camiones & Canal 10 MDP TV Tour de las Americas – Mar del Plata Open, PSA M5 tournament saw local player Matias Valenzuela come up with a huge upset against 2015 Pan American Games bronze medallist Rodrigo Pezzota to reach the main draw.

Valenzuela found himself 2-1 down to the World No.451 after a breathless start to the match but battled back with renewed vigour to complete the win with a sensational 13-11, 9-11, 10-12, 11-8, 13-11 scoreline, securing his main draw participation in the process.

His victory sets up a first round fixture with Mexico’s Juan Gomez Dominguez, with Dominguez appearing at his first PSA World Tour main draw of 2016.

Argentina’s Gonzalo Miranda moved through to the main draw courtesy of a 3-1 triumph over Ignacio Gutierrez Keen. Miranda swept to the opening two games in a virtuoso display before fending off late interest from his opponent to close out the win. Second seed Andres Herrera will go head-to-head with Miranda as he makes his first PSA World Tour appearance since he faced World No.1 Mohamed Elshorbagy in February’s Taeq SquashColombia PSA Open.

Federico Cioffi and Nicolas Caballero clashed in an exciting five-game battle with the former throwing away a 2-0 lead, only to rally in the decider to force the win over the line and set up a main draw meeting with Brazil’s Diego Gobbi.

Robertino Pezzota, brother of the vanquished Rodrigo, was the other final qualifying round victor with his routine victory over Francesco Marcantonio seeing him through to face Dairo Sandoval in the next round.
