WWC Qualifying Update: Shahin Stuns Second Seed Hansen

24 April 2016

#PSAWorldTour

The final round of qualifying at the Naza PSA Women’s World Championship saw Egyptian World No.50 Nadine Shahin claim arguably the biggest win of her career with a shock victory against second qualifying seed Line Hansen in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Shahin dropped a highly competitive first game that saw Hansen narrowly edge ahead after prevailing on the tie-break, but Shahin responded with a maturity that belied her tender years and battled back impressively.

The 18-year-old, who is ranked 25 places below the experienced Hansen in the World Rankings, took three games on the bounce to seal a superb victory by a 10-12, 11-7, 11-7, 11-4 scoreline which has seen the talented youngster claim a place in her maiden World Championship main draw. Shahin will take on former World No.2 Jenny Duncalf in the main draw’s opening round, with Duncalf looking to rediscover the form that took her to a semi-final in the 2012 World Championship.

Mariam Metwally will join her compatriot in the main draw after defeating fellow Egyptian Amina Yousry, the 16-year-old who stunned top qualifying seed Nicolette Fernandes in the previous round. Yousry pushed Metwally all the way to five games in a back and forth encounter but ultimately fell just short as Metwally moved through to the main draw which will feature eight Egyptian representatives. She will face off against Delia Arnold in round one, with World No.15 Arnold looking to perform well on home soil.

Elsewhere, Samantha Teran claimed her main draw berth courtesy of a convincing 3-0 win against Milou van der Heijden to set up a difficult meeting with World No.1 Laura Massaro, while Olivia Blatchford will face England’s Sarah-Jane Perry after downing four-time World Championship runner-up Natalie Grinham.

Coline Aumard, Megan Craig, Liu Tsz-Ling and Joey Chan were the other final qualifying round victors. Aumard will line up against Nouran Gohar in the main draw, while Craig’s reward is a fixture with United States No.1 Amanda Sobhy. Meanwhile, Tsz-Ling and Chan will play Nour El Tayeb and Camille Serme, respectively.
