BritOpen Update: Kawy Overcomes Chan

23 March 2016

Sixth seed Omneya Abdel Kaway demolished the challenge of Joey Chan in the second round of the Allam British Open Squash Championship as she claimed victory in little over 20 minutes to reach the quarter-final stage.

Kawy sped into a 5-0 lead in the first, demonstrating her authority from the ‘T’ as she had Chan running all over the court just to stay in the rallies. To her credit, Chan eventually managed to put points on the board, but the contest was never really in doubt as the Egyptian took the first game 11-5.

The second game was almost symmetrical to the first. Kawy once again stormed in front, this time leading 4-0. After a few longer rallies, Kawy took the game by the scruff of the neck, establishing a 10-4 margin, and sealed the game with her second game ball.

Perhaps the only blemish on Kawy’s game was that it took her three game balls to finish off her opponent, something she will have to improve going into the quarter final stage.

“I knew I had to win this game 3-0 because the first match was 3-2,” said Kawy – who almost suffered a shock exit against Tesni Evans in round one.

“I can now rest my body so I am very glad to get through 3-0.

“Ever since I was a junior we were always looking towards the British Open and I want to do well and better my results here in the past. My previous best was in the quarter finals.

“All the top 20, 50 players are strong. I just need to focus and try win every point.”

Result:
[6] Omneya Abdel Kawy (EGY) bt Joey Chan (HKG) 3-0: 11-5, 11-5, 11-9 (22m)
