WindyCity Update: Duncalf Downs Fernandes

27 February 2016

Former World No.2 Jenny Duncalf got off to a winning start in the 2016 Windy City Open courtesy of a straightforward straight-games victory over Guyana’s top ranked player Nicolette Fernandes.

Duncalf, who suffered a series of disappointing back-to-back early round exits during competitive play in January, began positively but began to make unforced errors which handed Fernandes game ball.

The Englishwoman managed to steady the ship though to take the opener 12-10 and from then on she controlled proceedings, playing with poise and accuracy to stay out in front as she stormed home to an 12-10, 11-7, 11-5 win.

“I’m very happy to get out of there in three,” said Duncalf.

“You can never take Nicolette for granted, she is such an athlete and probably one of the best retrievers on the tour.

“In the first game, I made something like 7 errors, and I felt that I was the one giving her the points, not her taking them away from me. So after I cut the mistakes out, I came back in the game.”

Result:
[13] Jenny Duncalf (ENG) bt Nicolette Fernandes (GUY) 3-0: 12-10, 11-7, 11-5 (37m)
