Youngjo Dispatches Idrakie in New South Wales Open

World No.249 Ko Youngjo came up with arguably the biggest scalp of his burgeoning career by defeating number five seed Addeen Idrakie with a dramatic 3-2 victory in the second round of the New South Wales Open, PSA M5 tournament.

The 19-year-old took the first game but was pegged back by the Malaysian in the second. A number of absorbing rallies caught the eye in the third and fourth games with both players taking a game apiece. Youngjo edged out the fifth to record an 11-8, 11-13, 11-5, 4-11, 11-8 triumph and advance to the quarter-final stage.

Second seed Zac Alexander will meet the South Korean in the next round after overcoming Chang Wook Woo in straight games.

Ondrej Uherka came up with the round’s other big surprise as he downed Kashif Shuja, who is ranked 65 places above him, with a 3-0 win. Uherka faces another stiff test against Hopkin in the next round but will be buoyed by his superb performance against Shuja.

Number three seed Joshua Larkin defeated Thomas Calvert in straight games and will do battle with compatriot Rhys Dowling after the Australian bested Jong Myoung Park.

Douglas Kempsell recovered superbly from his gruelling opening round match against Joshua Masters to defeat Solayman Nowrazi by an 11-9, 11-2, 11-9 scoreline. His reward is a quarter-final clash with Lewis Doughty after the Englishman beat Mohamed Abdelkalek.
