Kempsell Downs Masters in New South Wales Open

Douglas Kempsell and Joshua Masters locked horns for the third successive PSA World Tour event with the former getting the better of his opponent in the opening round of the New South Wales Open, PSA M5 tournament.

The pair had met in the final of the recent Greater Shepparton City Council International with Kempsell the victor on that occasion before Masters got his revenge in the second round of the City of Greater Bendigo International a week later. This time it was Kempsell who managed to take the win after a high-octane encounter ended 11-2, 9-11, 11-4, 9-11, 11-2 in the Scot’s favour.

The number four seed goes on to the second round where he will do battle with Solayman Nowrozi after the qualifier dispatched David Clegg in a 3-0 rout.

Top seed Matthew Hopkin remains on course to play to his seeding after a 3-0 victory over TJ French. The Australian, who has two PSA World Tour titles to his name, was irrepressible throughout the encounter and has set up a second round match with compatriot Alex Eustace after he bested Courtney West.

Meanwhile, Zac Alexander overcame Aaron Frankcomb in a dramatic five-game-thriller and goes on to meet Chang Wook Woo in the next round after the South Korean defeated Rohan Toole.

Joshua Larkin, who made it to the final of the Bendigo International last time out, saw off Martin Svec in straight games and will face Thomas Calvert who overturned a 2-0 deficit against Darcy Evans to progress.
