Youngjo Downs Bon Jovi Bong in Melbourne

Ko Youngjo produced a big upset in the second round of the Greater Shepparton City Council International, PSA M5 tournament with a titanic victory over five games against Valentino Bon Jovi Bong.

The pair had a 107 place gap between them in World Rankings with the higher-ranked Bon Jovi Bong the clear favourite heading into the encounter. Youngjo took the lead but was put to the sword by Bon Jovi Bong in the second game, winning just a solitary point in the proces. Games three and four saw the duo trade high-velocity blows and they went into the fifth and final game tied at two games each.

Youngjo galloped into an early lead which he refused to relinquish and the South Korean recorded an 11-6, 1-11, 11-8, 5-11, 11-6 to move on to the quarter-final stage.

He will meet Joshua Larkin there after the Australian saw off Jaejin Yoo while top seed Jaymie Haycocks sailed into the next round with a 3-0 victory over Jong Myoung Park.

Tayyab Aslam is also through to the quarter-final stage with a hard-fought win against Mithran Selvaratnam. The Pakistani second seed took the match in three but was forced to battle through two tie-breaks to get there. He faces Douglas Kempsell next after the Scot dispatched Khaled Zahran.

19-year-old Kush Kumar will meet Joshua Masters after the pair celebrated emphatic wins over Martin Svec and Alex Eustace, respectively and both will be eyeing up a potential semi-final showdown with Haycocks.
