Top seed Alejandro Garbi Caro swiftly overcame Brian Byrne in the opening round of the Madeira International Open Squash, PSA M5 event as all eight seeded players made it through to the quarter-final.

The Spaniard took the first game in a comfortable rout before a second game wobble saw Byrne level things up. Irishman Byrne, who is ranked 318 places below the 32-year-old, briefly threatened a stunning comeback but the Spanish No.3 pressed on in the final two games to earn a 11-2, 5-11, 11-5, 11-7 victory.

Caro’s hard work sees him through to the next round where he will meet Joe Green after the Englishman dispatched compatriot Sam Ellis in straight games.

There were also wins for Jan Koukal and George Parker who saw off Joeri Hapers and Remo Handl 3-0 in their respective games. Koukal will meet Rui Soares in his quarter-final berth after the Portuguese beat Tom De Mulder while Tristan Eysele’s victory over Omar El Tahry means he will face off against Parker.

Elsewhere, Mark Fuller will face Lyell Fuller after they saw off Pascal Gomez and Claudio Pinto, respectively.
