Clyne and Elias Climb Through in Costa Rica

Tournament favourites Alan Clyne and Diego Elias came through their first round matches unscathed at the Costa Rica Tennis Club Open, PSA Challenger 10 event as they both downed their opponents in straight games.

Clyne faced Paraguayan Nicolas Caballero in his round one bout and he dispatched the qualifier in a comfortable 11-3, 11-6, 11-2 victory while teenage sensation Elias made no mistakes against Cameron Stafford.

The Cayman-islander had pulled off two back-to-back shocks during qualification to eliminate Antonio De La Torre and Sean Conroy but Peruvian World Junior Champion Elias was a step too far for as he lost out 11-6, 11-5, 11-4.

Clyne and Elias will clash with Mohamed Reda and Arturo Salazar, respectively, in the next round. Elias will have to be particularly wary of Mexican Salazar as he caused the only upset on the opening day, shocking number five seed Muhd Asyraf Azan to advance to the quarter-final.

Alfredo Avila is also through after a victory over Joe Chapman which will see him go up against Peter Creed in the next round while Shawn Delierre’s win over Chris Hanson sees the Canadian World No.53 into the quarter-finals where he will meet Eric Galvez who completes a Mexican triplet in round two.
