Delierre Irresistible In Resistencia

Hope of home success in the final of the Regatas Resistencia Open in Argentina were dashed for the second year in a row when local star Leandro Romiglio went down in four games to Canadian Shawn Delierre in the PSA Challenger 10 squash event in its fifth year at Club Regatas Resistencia in Resistencia.

Runner-up in 2014, Romiglio romped into the fourth PSA World Tour final of his career after upsetting two higher-ranked opponents – the 24-year-old’s major breakthrough coming in the quarter-finals when he ousted top seed Martin Knight, the world No.53 from New Zealand.

Fresh from confirming his status as the country’s top player after winning the Canadian National title for the second time earlier this month, Delierre beat local hope Robertino Pezzota in the semi-finals to reach his 22nd Tour final.

But it was underdog Romiglio, the No.8 seed looking for his first win over Delierre, who took the opening game in the final.

Delierre, the 32-year-old world No.56 from Montreal, regained the advantage, however, to take the second – then fought back from 10-7 down in the third to move ahead of Romiglio, ranked outside the world top 100.

The Canadian continued his mastery in the fourth and, after 72 minutes, closed out the match 4-11, 11-6, 12-10, 11-6 to claim the 15th Tour title of his career.
