Abierto Colombiana RD2: Wildcards Gomez and Torres Continue Run

The second round of the Abierto Colombiana Club La Pradera took place on Thursday at the Club La Pradera De Potosi in Cundinamarca, Colombia, and the surprises kept on coming, with the same wildcard pair making it through the next round.

In the first round, the wildcard duo of Juan Jose Torres and Juan Carlos Gomez caused upsets, and the pair did so again in the last 16, along with Paraguayan No.1 Francesco Marcantonio, to make it through to the quarter finals of the Challenger 5 level competition.

Gomez took on No.3 seed Josue Enriquez for a place in the last eight, and the pair did battle over five games, with the Colombian wildcard coming back from a game down to take the victory. He won the last 11-7 to take victory after 68 minutes, booking his spot in the quarter finals.

Torres did battle with No.5 seed Joeri Hapers, and he also came from behind to defeat the Belgian, having to win the last two games of their contest to advance to the last eight. The Colombian was behind after three games, but came back to win the last two 11-8 and 11-7 to make his move through.

The other man to cause an upset on the second day of the tournament was Paraguay’s Francesco Marcantonio, who overcame the challenge of Colombia’s No.4 seed Edgar Ramirez Bautista, also in five games. The Paraguayan led on two occasions, only to see the No.4 seed fight back to the level the match twice, but he was able to regroup, winning the fifth to book his spot in the quarter finals.

The quarter finals of the Abierto Colombiana Club La Pradera will take place on Friday, June 17, with the last eight battling it out for places in the semi-finals on Saturday.
