QSF 3 QF: Romiglio Downs Top Seed To Continue Incredible Run

Argentina’s Leandro Romiglio has continued his incredible run at the QSF 3 in Doha, Qatar, as he knocked out top seed Karim El Hammamy in the quarter finals, beating a higher-seeded player for the third day in succession.

The Argentinian came into the Challenger 20 level tournament at the Khalifa International Tennis & Squash Complex as one of the unseeded players, and after knocking out a 9/16 seed and the No.5 seed, Romiglio came up against top seed El Hammamy in the last eight of the competition.

The World No.29 took the first game 11-6, but from there on, it all went the way of the 31-year-old from Mar del Plata, as he took the next 11-3. The third went to a tie-break, but the Argentinian was able to clinch it 12-10, before going on to win the fourth 11-3 to book his place in the semi-finals of the competition.

Romiglio will now face home favourite Abdulla Mohd Al Tamimi in the last four in Doha, after the Qatari No.1 downed Welshman Emyr Evans on Sunday evening. Al Tamimi won the opening two games, both by 11-8 score lines, before seeing Evans claim the third. The World No.48 regrouped, to win the fourth and advance to the semis on home soil.

The other match of the last four will see No.2 seed Leonel Cardenas and No.4 seed Yahya Elnawasany go head-to-head for a place in the final. The World No.37 overcame Portugal’s Rui Soares to reach the semis, while the Egyptian defeated compatriot Mazen Gamal in straight games.

The semi-finals of the QSF 3 will take place at the Khalifa International Tennis & Squash Complex on Monday, May 23, with the winners of today’s matches advancing to the finals of the Challenger 20 level tournament.
