Only Three Seeds Survive On Day Two In Budapest

24 September 2024

On an entertaining second day in Budapest, Wales’ Emyr Evans spoilt the party after he downed home favourite and No.3 seed Balazs Farkas in five games to reach the Budapest Open quarter finals. The top two seeds in the competition also exited as English duo Jonah Bryant and Declan James downed Leandro Romiglio and Omar Mosaad.

The Hungarian No.1 was last on as he took on the spirited Welshman on the all-glass court at City Squash. Evans took a tight opening game 13-11 before being on the receiving end of some fantastic squash by Farkas, who was starting to look like he was enjoying himself in front of friends and family. Evans responded in style in the fourth game taking it 11-6 to force a nail-biting decider. The home favourite earned the first match ball at 10-9 but back came Evans again, after levelling at 10-10 the lower-ranked Evans played two near perfect backhand drops to close out the match and silence the Budapest crowd.

Evans will now take on Patrick Rooney in the last eight after he beat Israel’s Daniel Poleshchuk in five games. Rooney was one of four English winners. The most notable win came from the up and coming Jonah Bryant, who overturned a 31 place ranking deficit to defeat top seeded Argentine Leandro Romiglio in straight games. Bryant will now take on Egypt’s Yassin Elshafei who downed No.8 seed Bernat Jaume in four games.

The other two upsets of the day came from Switzerland’s Yannick Wilhelmi and England’s Declan James. Wilhelmi found top form as he needed only three games to defeat No.5 seed Juan Camilo Vargas. James needed all five games to move past the experienced Omar Mosaad. In a battle of two giants, James twice trailed but managed to close out the fifth game 11-8 with a superb backhand kill to take his place in the final eight.

Quarter final action gets underway at 15:00 (GMT+2) with action available to watch live here. Live scores are also available to follow here.
